Back off from the Internet, commissioner Malmström

It has come to our knowledge that European commissioner for home affairs, Cecilia Malmström will propose a filtering system of Internet web sites for all of the union member states.

This system has been deployed in many places already; in China they call it “The Golden Shield”, in Australia it filters out women with small breasts, and in Iran it prevents civil rights groups to use the Internet. Even though it can be circumvented easily, it still cuts off large parts of the populations from accessing information.

Once deployed, in the name of fighting paedophilia online, this block filter will rapidly extend to also block political, religious or other sensitive information.

Europe will no longer be an open society if there is state censorship. No matter how horrible the content of certain websites is, censorship is a method for despotic regimes, not for democracies. Censorship is an easy way out if you don’t want to deal with the real problem and lowers the incentive for authorities to get to the cause of child pornography. You will not find the solution by censoring our communication networks; censorship just treats the symptoms. People that really want to communicate with each other will always find methods to circumvent the control systems. The censorship that you propose will primarily affect internauts using plaintext communication networks.

We command Cecila Malmström to rethink her position. It is not acceptable that our communication networks should be controlled, filtered and censored. We are closely monitoring not only this matter, but also the ongoing renegotiations of the data retention directive, for which Malmström is responsible. Europe must turn around and stop sleepwalking into a surveillance society and state censorship!

Every day Chinese internauts risk their well-being by breaching through the digital wall of oppression. Europe will loose its credibility needed to condemn such violations when we are about to do the same thing.

Now is the time to back off.

As was to be expected: we’ll have enough reasons for a new “Freedom not Fear” demonstration in September. All European citizens stand up and fight for your freedom!

See http://www.freedom-not-fear.eu/ for the international initiative.

Perhaps it is time ti issue a Declaration of Independance for the internet, and declare us to be a souvereign nation. And then ban, upon pain of death, all those who would wage war on teh internet, and all nations harbouring such criminals against the internet and humanity to be terrorist-nations to be annihialated. (Well, not the nation per se, or the people, but the filthy politicians)

@admin: if possible don’t just promote it, try to motivate people to really take action and start planning and organizing events all across the world/Europe. The German event was pretty well visited so far, but the other could have needed a lot more attaining people. ;) I’m pretty sure the AK Vorrat (and AK Zensur) will help where they can. Contacting them or their mailing lists might be a good starting point.

The most important thing all European citizens need to do right now is creating a huge and large network against these attempts to take away all remaining freedom and liberty. Really. Everybody thinking it won’t become that bad. Or that others took action already and that is enough, Wake up, it’s your rights at stake too. Contact your members of parliament (national and EU), organize demonstrations, write articles (and give them for free to the press), donate to groups which fight for your freedom and organize demonstrations (a good demonstration can be very expensive). Do whatever you can. Every bit is important.

The governments of this world need to remember whom they’re supposed to serve!

Me again: her proposal is available in text form at http://ec.europa.eu/justice_home/news/intro/doc/com_2010_94_en.pdf (replace the two character language code by your own, e.g. “de” for German).

A real highlight is on page six:

    • Collection and use of expertise
There was no need for external expertise.

@admin: You’re welcome. :) Isn’t Europe all about cooperation? We’ll show them how good the citizens of Europe understand each other and will stand up for a common goal.

A (good) English comment on this matter was released by the Guardian: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2010/mar/29/blocking-child-abuse-websites-eu
A very good English overview with lots of background information can be found at http://mogis-verein.de/eu/ (you may help translating it to your native tongue).
If you’re able to speak German, have a look at Spiegel Online (), Süddeutsche () or heise online ().
As a lot of Germans have just fought against Mrs. von der Leyen’s plans on this matter in the last year, the German activists are already on high alert and AFAICS a lot of people are rallying. So I just hope this kind of awareness can be spread all across Europe and we declare in one voice: Back off from the Internet, commissioner Malmström.
