Call for participation during the Conciliation of the the Telecoms Package

Dear Members of the European Parliament.

On behalf of the WeRebuild network, we are writing to you because we know that you can make a difference in the third reading in the Telecoms package. We are convinced that we all want only the best for the future of the European Internet.

We are at the end of the negotiations concerning the Telecoms package. Together we have come far, and we are now at the final steps. We want you to be present during the third reading by the conciliation committee to provide crucial perspective on these following important issues.

A. Diversity – The outcome of the legislation is extremely important for the future development, not only of the European telecoms sector, but for innovation in general, free competition and our future knowledge based society. What is at stake now is the question of which path we should choose.

Should we further strengthen outdated business models? Or does the internet allow for new exciting opportunities and markets that can, have and will grow out of a free and open Internet?

B. Rule of Law - What is the relationship between citizens and the core infrastructure that we call the Internet, an infrastructure that does not just ship goods, but one that conveys critical debates, public opinions and the sharing of ideas? In some member states there are tendencies that the access to the Internet may be interrupted for the mere suspicion of copyright infringement.

Do you, as a Member of the European Parliament, really think that this is a fair treatment of maybe the most important communications medium right now, and in the future?

In summary
We want you to consider these two things. The question concerning diversity of the future infrastructure and the question concerning the citizen’s right to a rule of law for access to the Internet. The reason for our constant reminders about these issues is because we know that they will impact our plural future. Because of this we want you, as an MEP, to take an active role in the Concilication committe, since we believe you can make a difference.

We are the Internet, you have been elected by the European people. Join the commitee and we will help to try and ensure a free and open Internet together.

With best regards,

Werebuild EU and the Telecomix News Agency (Internetional)
