No Google Day – 1 st. of September

Internet, September 1, 2009
Message to all internauts!
September 1st is the official No-Google-Day, and the Telecomix News Agency would like to communicate a message to you.
On the internets, there is a giant search engine called Google. It provides accurate searches and great data for us. Sometimes we even wonder if it is possible to surf the nets without it.
Back in the old days, yes, back in the nineties, we had Webcrawler, Lycos, and Altavista. These engines were slow, boring and not very good at finding things. Then Google appeared out of nowhere, and changed Internet history forever.
The No-Google-Day is not a protest against Google. We like Google and use it every day!
Rather, the 1st of September is a celebration of internets for the abundance of information and potential of communication it brings to the world. We propose that everybody stop using all Google services for 24 hours because we need to explore a few crucial questions:
- How do we navigate on the internets? The most common way today is to search text content stored on servers, Googles primary purpose. But there are many other ways to browse through the tubes we call internet. Your friend may send you a URL, you may accidently navigate to an unexpected site, and nowadays you can even transport a web server in your mobile phone over to your friends – a mobile sneakernet.
- How vulnerable is our life when we use Google services as frequently as we do? Back in the days of television there were only a few channels to tune in to. With the internet the possibilities are endless, there are already more websites than human beings (and with the IPV6 protocol all living and inert beings could have their very own address). Despite this we tend to centralize our search behaviour to one site. This is not out of necessity, but rather something deeply entrenched in internaut culture. Even away from keyboard we colloquially announce “I Googled it”, it has become a verb as common as “eat” or “run”.
We want to ask, could we do it some other way?
How to participate in the No-Google-Day:
What do we do without Google for one day?
Let us give you a survival guide for the 24 hours without Google services:
- Take a good look at the list of other search engines, so that you can try one of googles many alternatives.
- Have a trip to your local gas station and get a hold of a printed copy of a map of your local area, rather than using google maps. Use any copy-device, such as Xerox, pencils or fax-machines.
- If you use Gmail, send an e-mail to your contacts and inform them that you won’t be able to answer them on the first of September should they send an e-mail to your Gmail-account. Tell them that they can reach you on your hushmail.com-account.
- Instead of viewing all your blogs and rss-feeds in Google reader, experiment with other ways of finding new and interesting stuff on the net. Ask your friends on twitter what may be a good read, search forums for interesting news or go to you favourite blog and re-explore their blogroll.
- If you are really committed, you can use the Telecomix NoGoogleDay Proxy for blocking out all Google sites for one day.
Report back in and share your experiences. Write about your No-Google-Day, take notes and discuss it with your friends. If you wish, you are welcome to send your stories back to us, and we will link/republish/remix.

I received no notice from google about “no-google day.” Therefore, I used google as usual all morning, including my gmail. Much to my surprise and shock this afternoon I could not access my gmail. Frightening!
I teach online and last night I could not get into my course home pages until late, late, late. Now, today . . . no gmail. I guess I will have to communicate on FB. I feel handicapped.

Today Sept. 17 seems to be a NOGOOGLE day also.
My computer says that the GOOGLE server does not respond.
What is happening?
Is GOOGLE on strike, in bankruptcy, or?
Will there be more of these days in the future?

Almost all Google servers do not respond at the moment and for the fast 4-6 hours.
The only GOOGLE I can reach is in Chinese. That doesn’t help me much.
I am looking for a GOOGLE in any “latin or similar alphabet” language that might use a different server than the american or european one.
I have tried Google.ru without success, because it doesn’t answer either.
